Hardinge, Inc. is an American machine tool builder headquartered in Elmira, New York. It began operation in 1890. Hardinge Brothers, Inc. was formed by Henry and Franklin Hardinge in Chicago, Illinois.The company produced several types of watchmaker’s tools that Franklin had designed.Franklin acquired the rights to the “cataract” range of precision bench lathes, formerly produced by the Cataract Tool and Bicycle Company. Hardinge is best known for its lathes, both non-CNC and CNC. Hardinge machine tool brands now include Hardinge, Bridgeport, Kellenberger, Usach, Hauser, Tripet, and Tschudin. It currently has subsidiaries in England, Germany, Switzerland, China, and Taiwan.
